Rationale:

The increased use of electricity and electrical equipment in workplaces has resulted in damages to machinery, accidents, injuries, fires among others. This course is intended to equip students with basic knowledge of electrical systems, the hazards involved and how to control the risks associated.

The aim of this program is to provide comprehensive training to students on the prevention of serious injuries from electrical hazards. 

Learning Outcomes:

1.      Identify and control hazards in electrical equipment and systems

2.      Design and implement safe work procedure for electrical works

 

Teaching Methods:

  • Modified lecture, demonstration and field practicals, individual and group assignments, videos

Duration:

2 weeks

Assessment:

Continuous assignments/practicals [40%], and final examination [60%]. 

Course Content:

·         Basic principles of electricity

o   AC & DC, Sources of electricity, distribution of electricity.

o   Ohms law

o   Single phase and 3 phase current

o   Earthing Principles

o   Static electricity

o   Electricity at Work Regulations

·         Electrical Hazards, effects of electric current on the body and control measures.

·         Safety considerations for installation, testing, commissioning, use and inspection of electrical systems (Sockets, extension cables, plugs, wiring, Safe Distances, Earthling, ELCB, IEE Regulations and Portable tools.

·         Safety measures, Log Out & Tag out system Domestic & Industrial distribution
