Rationale:

Occupational health is a multidisciplinary activity aimed at: the protection and promotion of the health of workers by preventing and controlling occupational diseases and accidents and by eliminating occupational factors and conditions hazardous to health and safety at work; the development and promotion of healthy and safe work, work environments and work organizations; the enhancement of the physical, mental and social well-being of workers and support for the development and maintenance of their working capacity, as well as professional and social development at work; enabling workers to conduct socially and economically productive lives and to contribute positively to sustainable development.

Occupational health has gradually developed from a mono-disciplinary, risk-oriented activity to a multi-disciplinary and comprehensive approach that considers an individual’s physical, mental and social well-being, general health and personal development.

Learning Outcomes:

·         The prevention of occupational accidents, injuries and diseases and the protection of workers

·         Know and mitigate many environmental hazards and burdens that are derived from occupational settings.

·         Be well informed of processes and agents that may be hazardous to the environment.

Modified lecture, individual/ group assignments, discussions, presentations and problem based learning

Assessment Criteria

Continuous assignments/practicals [40%], and final examination [60%]. 

Course Content:

·         Introduction to the occupational hygiene; aims and purpose

·         Effects of work on health and health on work:

·         Occupational diseases and illnesses by systems and target organs:

o   Musculoskeletal problems

o   Occupational skin diseases

o   Sensory disorders

o   Occupational respiratory disorders

o   Occupational cancers.

·         Management of Occupational ill-health; Prevention and control, Challenges associated with Management of occupational ill-health
